Electrical Systems Upgrade for Sailing Yacht

This yacht Bimble was at Richardsons Yacht Services for some insurance work to it's generator.

Objectives

Whilst the yacht was at Richardson's having this work done we were asked to refresh the onboard electrical systems whilst upgrading to lithium.

Solution

Once the Generator was in place with all fuel and water connections by Richardson's, we completed the generator installation and tied it into the new electrical system. The generator was now controlled by the Victron Quattro and sVictron Cerbo GX with Touch 50 display. Four Pylontec 100a 12v Lithium's were fitted to be able to easily run the Quattro inverter and lithium system. Pylontec were chosen due to their superior rugged design and CAN BUS charging capabilities. The CAN BUS from the BMS of the Pylontec control the charging rate of the Quattro due to the CAN BUS being connected to the Cerbo GX.

One of our tasks was to re-wire and add appropriate fusing to 12dc powered winches and other electrical systems. This was a major installation. The winches were wired to run from a lead acid engine starting bank powered by twin Varta LFS 105 n batteries. This engine bank has an Orion TR charging to the lithium bank to protect the alternator. Various custom CNC panels were created to keep the vessel looking great and simple to use.

Benefits

The solar panels are half cell solar monocrystalline, which have excellent charge rates and manage shading better than standard panels. Port and Starboard Victron MPPT controllers are fitted to also help mitigate shading and the path of the sun.

The full system can now be controlled by the user intuitive screen of the Victron Touch 50. With a mobile data sim connected to the onboard Wi-Fi the vessel can be monitored and controlled remotely. This also includes the option to start and stop the generator or monitor the various tanks or bilges.
